WHAT IS SEED STORIES? 14 weeks of free, all ages eco-art programming offered at the Backyard Growcery from July 10th to the end of the 2024 market season. From a place of curiosity and play, we invite participants of all ages and ability to explore various methods of nature-based art making. Using eco materials sourced directly from our market vendors and local businesses, we will be making naturally dyed plant paper embedded with native seeds so that the art will grow when planted.
Seed Stories will grow more than native plants! Creating this project together, we will grow greater awareness and connection to our local ecology, to our food systems, and to our creative capacity. These interactive workshops will culminate in a community created public art installation and art exhibition.
This FREE community programming is made possible through the generous support of the
Essex County Community Foundation, CreativeCounty, and Awesome Gloucester.

Learn about the Juneteenth Holiday and its connection to Cape Ann history while celebrating Black history through music, dance and food. Visit the special exhibition of Doris Prouty’s quilts on display at the Janet & William Ellery James Center and tour the historic White-Ellery House.
As described by the North Shore Juneteenth Association, “Juneteenth is an American Holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865, the date that enslaved Black people of Galveston, Texas, learned that President Abraham Lincoln had freed enslaved people in rebel states two and a half years earlier. This was the last group of enslaved Black people to learn of their freedom! Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, a day to reflect on how far we have come and how we will continue to move forward, and a day to focus on the complexity of the Black American experience.”

Presented in collaboration by Salem Main Streets and Creative Collective, this year’s event highlights the importance of the creative workforce and how it contributes to and stabilizes the local economy. Arts and culture are an integral part of day-to-day life in Salem. This annual festival has become a source of pride and revenue for hundreds of creative professionals and a major economic boost to the local community.
“Creating community has always been the underpinning purpose of the Salem Arts Festival, and our Salem community desperately needs to heal and build together again after the past year.” John Andrews, Founder, and Founder of Creative Collective stated, “The creative community has been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic but throughout the crisis, this community of makers, artisans, performers, and creators were integral in keeping our families and communities hopeful, entertained, and inspired. As we start to come out of the crisis, we feel it is critically important to foster, support and amplify the creative workforce by providing them with paid opportunities.”
